Letter from Dr Azam to McDonalds, Oldham, Lancs, dated 21 March 2011
Dear Sir/Madam,
Just a quick query. I teach in Oldham and quite a few of my pupils dine here at your Restaurant.
They want to know if McDonalds McFlurry contains any animal fat, gelatine etc. or any other animal product except milk. And are the fries cooked in sunflower oil or animal fat?
Thanks in advance for the information and I'll show your reply to my pupils for their interest when I have received it.

Reply from McDonalds to Dr Azam, dated 24 March 2011
Dear Dr Azam,
Thank you for your letter regarding the ingredients which go into our food and food preparation. We are always willing to give answers to the concerns of our customers, especially if it will stop unnecessary rumours about how we cook and prepare our products.
I would first like to assure you that we do not use animal fat to cook any of our products; we use 100% vegetable oil. The vats we cook the fries in are kept separate from the vats we cook chicken and fish in, and the cleaning and filtering system we use is also kept separate, so there is no possible way for cross contamination. I can assure you that our fries are 100% suitable for vegetarians. They are made from pure British-grown potatoes and have nothing added to them until we apply salt in the restaurant before seving.
The mix we use is made from milk, soya and sweeteners. We do not use animal fat in our dairy products. If your students would like any more answers on our menu and ingredients, we do have a Website:
www.makeupyourownmind.com
[see URL below]On this Website, you can ask any questions about our restaurants, whether it be about the history of McDonalds or the different menu items we sell and someone will reply to you within 24 hours. Please visit the Site and ask as many questions as you like. I still use the Website if I am a little unsure.
I have also enclosed a copy of our tray liner for some extra information for you. On the back, it has a list of all our products and a table showing allergy levels and salt, sugar, fat percentages for you.
I hope this has all been useful for you and I hope your students will continue to visit our restaurant.
Many thanks,

Letter from Dr Azam to Walkers Snack Foods Ltd., dated 25 March 2011
Dear Sir/Madam,
Please send me your vegetarian list at the above address.
In the 1990s, I was in regular contact with Walkers and was a valued correspondent, being sent updated vegetarian lists on a regular basis.
I used the correspondence for part of my Halal Ingredients Report on my Site: www.dr-umar-azam.co.uk
Now I've written to Walkers, McDonalds, Coca Cola [re: the recent rumour about alcohol content] with a view to compiling an updated report.

Dear Mr.Azam,
thanks for contacting us, we are pleased to give you the following information:
According to European Food legislation all ingredients have to be labelled in the list of ingredients on the label. Nestlé Smarties produced in Germany are made with the following ingredients: sugar, cocoa mass, whey powder product, butter oil, wheat flour, cocoa butter, skimmed milk powder, starch, emulsifier sunflower lecithins, fruit- and vegetable concentrates (safflower, radish, black carrot, lemon, hibiscus, red cabbage), spirulina concentrate, glazing agents (carnauba wax, bees wax), invert sugar syrup.
A you can see, we are not using any colours (=food additives with E-numbers), but fruit- and vegetable concentrates for the colours of our Smarties. E120 is not present in Smarties.
With kind regards,
Nestlé Deutschland AG

SALAM, MUFTI MACKOOJEE
I'M FORWARDING TO YOU THE EMAIL FROM NESTLE SWITZERLAND THAT ARRIVED THIS MORNING.
THERE'S GOOD NEWS - SMARTIES MANUFACTURED IN GERMANY DO NOT CONTAIN THE E120 ADDITIVE AND, BECAUSE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CONCENTRATES ARE USED FOR COLOURING, THEY ARE THEREFORE HALAL FOR A MUSLIM DIET.
THANKS FOR CONTACTING ME ABOUT THIS MATTER.
MAY ALLAH GIVE YOU ALL THAT IS BEST IN BOTH THE WOLDS! AMEEN.
